Knowledge of Self-Care Management among Patient with non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus

ABSTRACT:
A descriptive study with cross sectional survey approach was carried out among 25 Patients were selected by purposive sampling technique and data were collected by using using semi structured interview schedule and questionnaire. The demographic variables of the findings show that higher (68%) percentages of patients were between the age group of above 55 years. Higher (60%) percentages of patients were males. Higher (48%) percentage of patients had no formal education. Most of them (88%) were married highest (52%) of them had family history of diabetes mellitus. The overall mean percentage score was (37.77%) revealed that the patients had average knowledge on NIDDM.

NEED FOR THE STUDY:
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease associated with abnormally high levels of the glucose in the blood. In 2014, the world highest number of people with diabetes mellitus is topped [31.7 million]. Type 2 diabetes comprises 90% of people with diabetes around the world. In 2013, the top 10 countries with higher prevalence of diabetes are Tokelau [37.5]. Federated States of Micronesia (35%), marshal island (34.9%), Kiribati (28%), cook island (25.7%). Vanuatu (24%), Saudi Arabia (23.9%), Nauru (23.3%), Kuwait (23.1%) and Qatar (22.9%).In Europe 56 million people have diabetes mellitus. Africa is the region which has the lower prevalence of diabetes mellitus. [J. J. Meier, 2013].
In Asia 60% people are affected with diabetes mellitus. In 1980, less than 1% of Chinese adults had the disease. By 2008 the prevalence had reached nearly10%. It was estimate that more the 92 million Chinese had diabetes, and another 148 million where pre diabetes. In urban areas of south India the prevalence of diabetes has reached early 20%. [G. Peirano, 2014].
In India 50.8% of people are affected by diabetes mellitus only 26.8% of non diabetes and 74.2%of diabetes were aware of the complications. In Tamilnadu 30.4% of people are affected in diabetes. Chennai district statistical data estimated that about 14.3% of people are recently suffering from diabetes. Coimbatore district 2 lakh people are affected. Madurai 13.5%, Tricy 12.4%, kancheepuram 40% affected in diabetes. [Narayanappan. D, 2014]. The prevalence among the age group between 40 and 60 years are affected with diabetes. Male’s 8.5% and 6.3% females are affected. In Salem 9.8% of people are affected by diabetes mellitus. [Mohan.D, 2014]. Thus the researcher feels that there is a need to assess the knowledge of self care management among patient with non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.
OBJECTIVES:
To assess the knowledge of self care management among patients with Non- insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.
METHODOLOGY:
Research design and approach:
Descriptive design study approach was used to assess the knowledge of self care management among patient with NIDDM.
Setting of the study:
The study was carried out in VMKVMC Hospital, Salem. The hospital is located nearby Vinayaka Missions Annapoorana College of nursing, Salem.
Population:
Population of the study were patient with non- insulin dependent diabetic mellitus in VMKVMC Hospital, Salem.
Sample:
Patient with NIDDM who were admitted in medical ward in VMKVMC hospital, Salem was the samples for this study.
Sample size:
25 patients with non- insulin dependent diabetes mellitus admitted in medical ward in VMKVMC hospital, Salem
Sampling technique:
Purposive sampling technique will be used to conduct the study.
Development of tool:
Closed ended multi choice questionnaire prepared to assess the knowledge of self care management among patients with NIDDM.
FINDINGS OF THE STUDY:
Most of the patients were between the age group of above 55 years. Majority of the people were males. Most of the patients had no formal education. Most of the patients were daily wagers. Most of the patients had family history of diabetes mellitus. Area wise analysis of mean, SD shows that the patients had average knowledge 37.77% about self care management among patients with non-insulin dependents diabetes mellitus.
CONCLUSION:
From the findings it can be concluded that most of the patients were in the age group of above 55 years and overall mean score was 37.77% which reveals that average knowledge about self care management among patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus
